Bruins Capture Third Place in Canada

UCLA wins three of five matches.

The UCLA men's volleyball team won three out of five matches over the weekend to capture third place in the annual Huskie Invitational, hosted by the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, SK.

In their first match on Jan. 2, the Bruins lost to the University of Alberta, Canada's top-ranked team, 3-0. The Golden Bears won 25-23, 25-22, 25-19.

Against Laval University at 2 p.m. on Jan. 3, UCLA won 16-25, 25-22, 25-23, 26-28, 15-13. Strong play at the net enabled the Bruins to edge the Rouge et Or in Game 5.

In a 7 p.m. match on Jan. 3, UCLA dropped a 3-0 decision to the University of Saskatchewan. The Huskies won 25-20, 25-22, 27-25. Allan Vince led the Bruins with nine kills.

In the third place match on Jan. 4 at noon, UCLA defeated Laval, 35-33, 20-25, 25-27, 26-24.

UCLA's final match was an exhibition against Tsukuba University of Japan. The Bruins won 21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-15. Junior Jonathan Acosta and senior Chris Pena led the Bruins in hitting and blocking.

UCLA begins the regular season Jan. 9 against Pacific in the first round of the Elephant Bar Invitational, hosted by UC Santa Barbara.
